Lizzie nuzzles under my arm as I lie on the sofa in the suite. The others went to bed ages ago, but I just can’t.

My mind is flying in a thousand directions. Why did that woman have to throw herself at me like that?

I used to love the attention, the screams and squeals, the ladies who flocked. Because heaven knows, I didn’t get a lot of attention before international stardom. It seemed like adoration of beautiful women was a side effect of writing great music, and I wasn’t about to complain.

Who knew it could get tiresome so quickly?

“Hey girl,” I cuddle into her face, because nobody does it better than her. “I’m okay.”

She rests her head on my chest and looks at me with big brown eyes that say, “I don’t believe you.”

“I am, girl. Or at least, I will be.”

That makes her pant a smile.

“Ugh, your breath is terrible.” But she doesn’t stop and I don’t try to make her.

I am such an idiot. Such, such an idiot.

I’d hoped she would feel what I felt when I sang Rapt Soul. A part of me believed that all the feeling that lay beneath the words would reach her, and the truth would be obvious to her at last.

I sang it just for her. I wrote it just for her. Because I’d always hoped that everything would be just for her.

Lizzie the Dog gives my ear a big lick and then drops to lie on the floor against the sofa, her head resting on her front paws.

“Good idea, girl. Might as well try to sleep.”

Nothing else good is going to come out of this day. Sometimes we just have to throw in the towel.
